Hellenistic Town of Daorson

Daorson is a spectacular ancient archaeological site featuring monumental Cyclopean stone walls. It was the capital of the Illyrian tribe of Daorsi, who adopted Hellenistic Greek culture, coinage, and architectural styles before being destroyed by Dalmatian tribes in the 1st century BC.

History

Dating from the 4th to the 2nd century BC, Daorson consists of three main sectors: the fortified Acropolis, the suburban settlement, and the industrial zone. The construction of the acropolis wall matches the classical Mycenaean and Hellenistic defensive military styles. The city enjoyed close trade links with Greece and Rome, minting its own bronze coins depicting ships, which reflects their maritime commerce before their sudden destruction during Roman civil wars.
