Despić House

Despić House is a historical home belonging to a prominent Serbian Orthodox merchant family. It is culturally famous as the birthplace of modern theater in Sarajevo, where the first organized theatrical performances were held in its living room.

History

The house is located close to the Miljacka River and the Latin Bridge. Its architecture shows the gradual shift from the classic Ottoman layout to the European lifestyle in the late 19th century. Inside, visitors can view early European Biedermeier furniture alongside traditional Bosnian divans, heavy wooden trunks, family portraits, and historical playbills from the first private salon theater performances.
