Austro-Hungarian Administration

The 1878 Congress of Berlin radically altered Bosnia's destiny, transferring administrative control from the Ottoman Empire to the Austro-Hungarian Empire, though it remained nominally under Ottoman sovereignty. In 1908, Austria-Hungary triggered the global Annexation Crisis by formally annexing Bosnia and Herzegovina. The Dual Monarchy embarked on an aggressive program of industrialization, infrastructure construction, and educational reform.

Under Finance Minister Benjamin von Kállay, the administration promoted a multi-confessional Bosnian national identity (Bošnjaštvo) in an attempt to curb rising Serbian and Croatian nationalist influences. Sarajevo was physically rebuilt, featuring spectacular Neo-Renaissance, Secessionist, and Moorish Revival architecture, such as the Vijećnica (City Hall). The rapid modernization, combined with deep-seated agrarian discontent and lack of democratic representation, fueled radical youth movements.

The Young Bosnia (Mlada Bosna) organization, backed by Belgrade, opposed Austro-Hungarian rule. On June 28, 1914, a young member named Gavrilo Princip assassinated the heir to the Habsburg throne, Archduke Franz Ferdinand, and his wife Sophie in Sarajevo. This critical event activated a web of European military alliances, plunging the global community directly into World War I and dissolving the Austro-Hungarian Empire by 1918.
