Born in Stuttgart, Germany to a Bosniak father, Ivica (born in Tuzla, Bosnia and Herzegovina), and a mother of Bosniak/Croatian heritage (Adisa). Emigrated to Gold Coast, Queensland, Australia in 1996. Won the 2008 Australian Open and 2009 US Open Boys’ singles titles, becoming the youngest player to win the Australian Open junior championship.

Reached the quarterfinals of Wimbledon in 2011 at age 18 and achieved a career-high ATP singles ranking of World No. 17.
