Kastel Fortress

Kastel is the historic heart of Banja Luka, situated at the confluence of the Vrbas and Crkvena rivers. Spanning 4.8 hectares, the fortress contains layers of Roman, medieval, and Ottoman fortifications, demonstrating thousands of years of continuous human settlement.

History

Archaeological finds indicate that the site was settled in the Neolithic era. In the 18th century, Austro-Hungarian threats led the Ottomans to reconstruct Kastel into an artillery stronghold with a star-shaped plan, drawing on French military architect Vauban’s styles. The fortress retains its thick ramparts, gatehouses, and defensive towers, offering a scenic walk along the fast-flowing Vrbas River.
