History

Throughout centuries of Ottoman rule, the monastery was a key center for preservation of Bosnian literacy and culture. Its museum holds a unique collection of medieval icons, paintings, and traditional Bosnian costumes. The site has deep connections to local folklore; older Catholic women in the village still wear black headscarves as a traditional sign of mourning for Queen Katarina, who died in exile in Rome in 1478.
