Born in Bosanski Šamac, raised in Sarajevo. Trained as a lawyer and philosopher. He spent years as a dissident intellectual and political prisoner under the communist regime for his writings on human dignity and spiritual freedom.
Elected Chairman of the Presidency of Bosnia and Herzegovina in 1990, he steered the nation through the referendum for independence in 1992, the Defense of the Republic (1992–1995), and the signing of the Dayton Peace Agreement.
