Republika Srpska

One of the two highly autonomous constitutional entities of Bosnia and Herzegovina. It is a highly centralized entity populated primarily by Serbs.

Composition

  • •Headed by an Entity President and two Vice-Presidents
  • •Entity Government headed by a Prime Minister
  • •Unicameral Parliament: National Assembly of Republika Srpska (83 seats)
  • •Subdivided into municipalities but possesses no cantonal middle layer of governance

Powers

  • •Broad residual powers including police forces, territorial administration, entity budget, tax administration, and agriculture.
  • •Maintains highly centralized government departments directly managing regional municipalities.

How members are chosen

Direct general elections for the President and the National Assembly (NSRS) for 4-year terms.

Veto and blocking mechanics
The Council of Peoples of Republika Srpska (28 members: 8 Bosniaks, 8 Croats, 8 Serbs, 4 Others) reviews legislation for compliance with Vital National Interest (VNI) protections.
